Why a links page? It’s not 2001!
If you remember the olden days of the internet, almost every website that wasn’t a commercial business had a links page. On it you could find, well, links! Links to other websites that were deemed cool, useful, or simply fun enough to warrant visiting. Sometimes the links were broken, but when it worked it was really fun. I remember being thirteen or so, and I’d just rummage through people’s links pages for neat stuff I had never been exposed to.
And then the dark times came. Today we are beholden to the algorithm. The almighty, malevolent, emotion-stirring algorithm. The algorithm that is designed to show you enough of what you want to make you keep scrolling, yet to do so in a way that makes you as unsatisfied with life (and therefore desirous of whatever it is those who pay for ad space are selling), and emotionally-unbalanced enough to keep you needing more information, while staying on the platform (and under their thumb) at all times. It is not a surprise that I despise the modern day algorithmic structure of the internet. So I rebel, and I do my duty, in part by bringing back the links page. Every link below is here not because of some computer-generated algorithm, but because I like it. Either I appreciate their products, think the website itself is cool, or some other reason. But they are human-curated, and I think in the future, curation done by and for humans will be one of the highest value commodities on the internet.
People and Personal Websites I Like
Nothing yet, but I’ll keep looking! In the meantime, if you have a personal website and want me to look at it, please let me know, and if I like it enough, maybe I’ll put it here!
Businesses I Appreciate
Founders Ministries – They have some of the best resources from a confessional, Reformed Baptist perspective.
Cool or Weird Stuff on the Internet
cameronsworld.net – This website is such a cool love letter to the internet of the past. If you were on the internet back in the late 90s/early 2000s, this website is a must-see. Make sure you click on the GIFs!
More on IndieWeb or Other Counter-Cultural Stuff
Indie Microblogging – This is a book by Manton Reece, owner of Micro.blog. Very in depth, and a great treatise from a developer’s perspective on the fall and hopeful rebirth of the internet.
